Reflective Beings
We are reflective beings. What exactly does that mean? To reflect something means that whatever comes our way whether it is a word spoken or a behavior we observe, we have the choice to copy it or reflect it to someone else. A good example of this is fashion. The other day I was walking somewhere and someone walked pass me with a pair of blue jeans on. Those blue jeans had holes up and down both legs. When I was an adolescent, we may have worn a hole in our jeans but they would be patched so the holes would not show. Today, having holes in your jeans is fashionable. When this particular fashion began to take hold, the more it was reflected to others the more you saw people wearing jeans with holes in them. Now, wearing jeans with holes in them is acceptable as well as fashionable.
Now I raise this to hold up for the reader that we were made to reflect. Unfortunately, some of the reflections being made today are truly bad. For instance, have you noticed how Asian-Americans are becoming more and more the target of racial abuse? Elderly Asian-Americans simply walking down the street not bothering anyone have been injured by people reflecting hatred. If I had to guess, I would lay you odds that these hate-reflectors have either had the same thing reflected to them or they may have heard someone reflecting falsities that somehow these Asian-Americans are the real problem in our world today so let’s hurt them and get them out of the way.
You certainly have a choice as to what you reflect. So why are we reflective beings? The answer to this question lurks in the darkness of our blindness. The result of our blindness has much to do with what we reflect. If we are unaware of a particular truth because we are blind to it, then what we will reflect is in essence our misconceptions of truth. In other words, what we are reflecting from our blindness is falsity. On the other hand, if we awake to the idea of recognizing our blindness then we begin to walk down a path to discover what is and who is Truth.
It is recorded in the Bible passage of John chapter 14 and verse 6 Jesus indicating that he is the Truth. Now on face value his claim to be truth for some may be difficult to accept. That is why an awakening to our blindness is so important. When we surrender to the awareness of our blindness then we begin to explore Truth that does not come from ourselves but rather comes from our source who is Jesus the Christ. We are not responsible for this awakening. However, we do participate in it through our desire to reflect the Truth. When one discovers this Truth has always been within them waiting to be ignited, the result reveals an inner Light that begins to be reflected to everyone around us.
When we are not aware that we are beings of reflection then we begin to hear stories about mass murders. Such stories are becoming increasingly common and with them an unsettling grief. We have a choice what we reflect. Our purpose is to reflect the love and light of God in Christ Jesus. But that purpose will not be revealed until we awaken to the Truth that already exists within each of us and that Truth is there by the will of God. I implore you, go find it!
