Letting Go
It’s not easy to let go, especially when one has worked their entire life in order to obtain the material possessions that they convinced themselves was necessary to be content. So for those who are experiencing their latter days, the time will come when every possession obtained will of necessity remain on planet earth. Depending on how precious these processions are to the obtainer and how much value is placed in them will determine the difficulty of the transition at the time of physical death.
The world was here before we were born into it and will be here after we leave it. For those who have spent the majority of their lives collecting material wealth including the energy spent in guarding such possessions have bought into the deception that the world is all there is. When this deception has taken root within, it veils over the truth of who we really are and where we really came from.
There is much to consider at this point. So what is it about these earthly possessions that so controls you to the extent that they possess you? These objects do not have a will of their own. Yet for those who have placed their energies in collecting and securing them have essentially become the object’s servant. Please consider the position with which your riches have maneuvered you. It is recorded in scripture, “What shall it profit a man if he should gain the whole world and lose his own soul or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?”
Once again I share the insights of Iris Lohrengel from her book Born From Above: What Jesus Really Said. “We are so busy. There is so much to do, and since we are ignorant about who we really are and what the purpose of life is, we focus on all the material things that exist in the world, desiring to possess them and to add them to who we think we are. We keep our minds occupied with objects instead of focusing on and being preoccupied with our true spiritual self. This is what deceives us, that we attach so much importance to the things of the world. Riches do not have value in and of themselves. All is transitory; nothing exists to be ours forever. Everything, absolutely everything, has to be given up at the moment of death; the only thing that remains is our spiritual richness and the love that we cultivate in our hearts— to share it with all of God’s creation.”
For the sake of your wellbeing and the time of transition in which we all will participate, begin the journey now of letting go of earthly possessions. Try to learn a lesson from the rich young ruler recorded in Luke chapter eighteen. He followed all the religious rules but when it came down to his status as a wealthy young man, he couldn’t bring himself to part with his possessions nor his wealthy status. Remember, it all stays right here! Letting go is not easy but its not impossible! Making the discovery of who you really are in Christ Jesus becomes the initial step of freedom that has always existed in the truth. I heard an expression that was utilized often in Alcoholics Anonymous meetings. Simply put, “Let Go and Let God!”
